Finland is northern and pretty cold country. That is why most of the dogs that were developed in this country are pretty tough breeds. Sadly, some of them are already extinct. There are 8 Finnish dog breeds: Finnish Spitz, Finnish Lapphund, Karelian Bear Dog, Karelo – Finnish Laika, Finnish Hound, Lapponian Herder, Tamaskan and Seskar Seal Dog.

My favourite breed is Finnish Spitz, which is kinda popular all around the world and not only in Scandinavia. It is also known as Finnish Barking Birddog or Finkie, this is national dog of Finland. They are known for barking a lot. That is because, they were originally bred to hunt, and then bark, when they found something. Since in Finland, they are still used for hunting, in the rest of the world, they are mainly companion dogs. Finnish Spitz is very people oriented and he hates to be alone, because of his sensitive nature. This fox like looking dog enjoys a lot of exercise – especially in snow. Without a lot of exercise he will become bored and destructive. As i said earlier, they bark a lot, but that is not only sound they are doing. Finnish Spitz is very talkative breed, he can croon, purr and yodel.
