10) Norwegian Lundehund

This breed almost extinct during the second world war, but luckily, they did survive. On the other hand, they are the rarest dogs of all AKC breeds, ranked 175th out of 175 in AKCs breed popularity rankings. Interesting fact about the Norwegian Lundehund is that they have six fully developed toes on each foot.

9) Lagotto Romagnolo

Lagotto Romagnolo is one of the few dog breeds that specialize on truffle hunting. They look cute and cuddly like typical lap dog, but the truth is, that they are working dogs, that require plenty of daily physical and mental exercise. We dont know the worldwide numbers of them, but in the USA, there is only about 500 of Lagotto Romagnolos today.

8) Azawakh

The West African sighthound is very intelligent and protective companion with short coat and elegant appearance. They are one of the rarest sightounds of all and there is only few thousands of them in the world.

7) Mudi

This Hungarian breed is not very well known and there is only few thousands of them alive. They evolved naturally from these three breeds – the Puli, Pumi and German Spitz. Unlike the Puli and Pumi, the Mudi never gained bigger popularity and they were considered the “third type” of Hungarian sheepdog.

6) Thai Ridgeback

Everyone knows the Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but what about the Thai Ridgebacks? They are intelligent, clean and loyal dog with strong survival instinct. Thai Ridgebacks are very ancient with history going back more than 4000 years. Today, there is only about 300 Thai Ridgebacks in the USA and few thousands in the world.

5) Chinook

The sled dog driver and explorer Arthur Treadwell Walden that developed a great sled dog Chinook. Today, there is only around 1 200 Chinooks in the world and in the year 1965, they were recognized as the worlds rarest dog breed by the Guiness World Records.

4) New Guinea Singing Dog

A rare breed native to the New Guinea Highlands which is best known for its unique vocalization and extremely high lifespan. This breed is known for their melodious howls and it really sounds like singing. And their lifespan? Its between 15 – 20 yeas.

3) Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier, or Czech Terrier is a small rare dog from forests of Bohemia. There is only something little bit over 1000 of them and they are one of the rarest recognized dog breeds. The Cesky Terrier was recognized by the FCI in the 1963.

2) Peruvian Inca Orchid

The only hairless dog breed on this list is Peruvian Inca Orchid. It is very ancient breed, they have been around since the year 750. They are extremely rare and there is only around 1000 of them in the world. They can be described as intelligent, fast and agile dogs.

1) Otterhound

The rarest and most endagered breed on this list is the Otterhound. According to the Otterhound Club of America, there is fewer than 800 Otterhound in the world today. They are pretty large, but they have good, goofy and friendly personality.

There are many endangered dog breeds, for example the Estrela Mountain dog, Xoloitzcuintli, Canaan dog, Skye Terrier, Tibetan Mastiff, Swedish vallhund, Bedlington Terrier, Finnish Spitz or Stabyhoun. Hopefully none of these breeds will become completely extinct any time soon.
