Samoyed is an ancient Siberian breed developed by nomadic tribes. They were bred to herd reindeers and to pull sleds. They were very versitale. Samoyeds came to England in the late 1800s, probably as gifts from the Czar of Russia.
2) Polar Expeditions
In the 19th century, explorers started to use Samoyed on their trips to the Pole – north and south. They especially choosed them for their endurance, trainability and their heritage of sled dogs. They were also leading the famous Roald Amundsen on his expeditions. Amundsan had a pack of 50 dogs, often times led by Samoyed named Etah.
This is a big advantage, if you really dont like the typical doggy odor. Samoyeds are completely stink free dogs – even when they are completely wet. Thanks to that, they do not need bathing just like other dogs
4) Sammy smile
Sammy have lips that naturally curve upwards which creates smiling like appearance. And there is a term for that – the Sammy smile. The smile definitely fits their happy and friendly personality.
5) Clothes from Samoyed
Samoyeds shed! And they shed a lot. But the good thing is, that they have thick double coat, which is soft and wool-like at the bottom while the top is coarse and straight. The wool like part is important, because some people started to collecting the Samoyeds fur, and they spun it into into a yarn that can be used to make clothing. Just search for The Potomac Valley Samoyed Club, they are always looking for Samoyed hair donations.
6) Wolf Like
Samoyeds belong to the Spitz family, which is a group of dogs that are very closely related to dogs. And you can see it on Samoyed. Their appearance is kinda wolf like, they love to howl and they love to live in a pack, just like wolves.
Samoyed is beautiful medium sized dog that has squre built with a fluffy plumed tail curled over the back. The height of Samoyed should be between 19-21 inches for females which is 48-53 cm and 21-24 inches for males which is 53-60 cm. The weight can vary a lot, mostly based on the gender, but generally it is between 50-65 pounds – which is 23-30 kg.
Samoyeds are generally pretty healthy dogs with good lifespan between 12-15 years. But as all dogs, they are still prone to some health issues, including glaucoma, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, diabetes and progressive retinal atrophy. There is also one disease, which is named after the Samoyed. It is called Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy and it is genetic kidney disease.
As i already mentioned in the video, samoyed is a double coated dog with soft, short and wool like undercoat and thick long outercoat. Interesting fact is, that Samoyed males tend to have thicker and denser coats than females. The coat can be in several colors, including pure white, biscuit, yellow, cream, and white with silver tips.
Samoyed coat is georgeous. But it is a challange to keep it in shape. You must be disciplined and consistent with the regular brushing, which will minimize the shedding and prevent tangling and matting
