1) Young breed
Weimaraners are not dog breeds with long history. For the first time they appeared in Germany in the early 19th century. They were dogs of the Nobles of Weimar, who bred Weimar pointers. To be clear, Weimar is a city in Germany. We are not sure what are their ancestors, but it is possible that Bloodhound might be one of them.
2) Not for everyone
The nobles of weimar wanted to keep the Weimaraner bloodline as pure as possible and that is why they were very careful in selecting who could have access to the puppies. Only the members of the German Weimaraner Club formed in 1897 had the possibility to own one.
Weimaraners look quite different when they are born. They have stripes, which fade after few days, maximally weeks. Their eyes also change. They are born with light blue eyes and as they grow up, the eye color change to either amber or a gray-blue.
4) Gray Ghost
This is a common nickname for a Weimaraner and it is perfect for them. The reason why they are called Gray Ghosts is because of their coat color and most importantly, they have stealthy hunting style and they are kinda hard to find. And when it is foggy outside, they can completely disappear into the landscape when they walk too far away.
Weimaraners were made for action and they need tons of exercise. They are one of the best long distance jogging buddies. But if you are not a running fanatic, you will have to provide other forms of exercise, for example vigorous playtime, playing fetch, or swimming. Be prepared for this, Weimaraners are one of the most active dogs of all.
Bloodhounds have the best nose in the dog world and it is believed, that they are one of the main ancestors of Weimaraners. So its no wonder, that even them have extraordinary sense of smell. They are excellent for different dog sports where sniffing is neeeded – for example tracking. And their nose definitely help them to become one of the best hunters.
7) Long coat
Everybody knows the smooth and short coat of Weimaraners. But did you know, that there is a long coated version? It is not accepted by the AKC breed standard, but it does exist. They were bred to hunt waterflow and the long coat protect them from cold water. But this type is extremely rare, since the long coat gene is recessive.
Did you know that Weimaraners are one of the fastest dogs in the world? And if we would not count the Sighthounds, they might be the fastest. They can run up to 35 mp/h. For comparsion, the top speed of Usain Bolt was 28mp/h. They used their speed when hunting deers and boars.
Weimaraners are large dogs with strong budies built for work. Their height should be between 23-26 inches which is 59-67 cm and their weight should be between 55-88 pounds which is 25-40 kgs. The females are naturally little bit smaller than males.
10) High Intelligence
Weimaraners are very smart dogs, but you should challange their intelligence as well as their energy. You can try learning them new tricks, give them some work to do, or buy them a lot of different puzzle toys. If you will not do that, they might learn some unwanted things bythemselves, for example opening door and escaping.
