Plott Hound - TOP 10 Interesting Facts

1) Origin

Plott Hound ancestor are a Hanoverian Schweisshunds which were brought to USA – to be more specific to North Carolina from Germany in 1700s. They were used for hunting and they were especially hunting large game, including bears.

2) Brindle Color

There are various color combinations of Plott, but they are always brindled. You can find Plotts in black brindle, brown brindle, blue brindle, and red brindle. They rarely have white markings. But if the markings are somewhere else than on the chest, it is considered as a fault by the AKC standard.

3) State dog

This dog was developed in North Carolina so its no wonder, that it is kinda a state treasure and that Plott hound became a State Dog of North Carolina. It was designated to this status in 1989 by the North Carolina General Assembly.

4) Protectors

Plotts are very loyal, fearless and protective over their owners and family. They are also pretty territorial, which means they will protect their property as well. But dont worry, if you they will meet the stranger with you, they are rarely agressive towards them.

5) Size

The Plott Hound is a medium-sized, powerful, muscular dog. Their height should be between 20-28 inches which is 50-71 cm and they should weigh between 40-60 pounds which is 18-27 kg. The females are naturally little bit smaller than males.

6) Not for Novices

Plott hounds are not the best choice for novice or even first time dog owner. It is because of their dominant and independent nature, which needs consistent and firm leader. They are not the easiest breed to train and handle. But experienced owner can achieve a lot with this breed, because plotts are also eager to please dogs.

7) Hunting instinct

Plotts are hunters by heart and they have extremely strong hunting instinct. If they smell something interesting, they will most likely follow the scent no matter what. That is why it is advised to keep your Plott on leash outside and you should have good fence around your yard.

8) Rarity

Plott hound is still pretty rare breed. You can mostly find him in the mountain regions of the America, to be more specific in the mountains of Appalachia, the Smokies. You can also find them in other wild parts of the USA where they still serve their original purpose – the hunting.

9) Exercise

Like all hounds, plotts need some daily exercise. Daily long walks are a must if you want to have a happy Plott hound and it is better if they have acces to a yard or a garden. They love to explore and sniff and you should let them do it. Its their natural instinct.

10) Health

Plotts are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they're prone to certain health conditions. The one health issue that is quite common with this breed is Bloating. Bloat is caused by the sudden influx of gas and air in the stomach which cause the stomach to twist.
