1) Origin

The true origin of the Lowchen is still disputed. The most accepted theory is, that Lowchen is a dog breed from the 14th century who lived in Western european countries like Germany, Spain, Belgium and France. They were bred to hunt vermin, but also as a typical lap dog.

2) Royalty

Lowchens were one of the favourite dogs of the prominent european nobility. Especially, the female nobility liked them and they often carried to court by the ladies. The reason, why ladies loved this breed was because of their affectionate and friendly personality and beautiful fluffy coat.

3) Little Lion

The reason why they are nicknamed little lion dogs is pretty obvious. It is because they resemble the lion appearance. In the past, the nobility spent a lot of time grooming Lowchens to resemble a lion. It is because lions were symbols of power, courage and strength and having dog like that by your side show high status.

4) Companions

Lowchens were bred to be companions and that is why they love to live indoors with their family around them. They are lively, sweet, affectionate and friendly dogs and they truly thrive for our attention. And since they are pretty playful, they make good companions for older children as well.

5) Extinction

In the middle of the 20th century, Lowchens were one of the rarest dog breeds in the world and it is believed, that in 1973, there were only 70 lowchens alive. The reason, why their population lowered so much was the two world wars, which affected countries where they mostly lived. Since than, they number increased and they are not in danger of extinction, but they are still rare dogs.

6) Barking

Lowchens might be one of the best companion and family dogs, but they also can be good watchdogs. It is because they love barking. You can be sure, that your Lowchen will alert you with their alarm barking whenever something suspicious is going on around your house.

7) Quick Learners

On of the great facts about Lowchens is, that they are intelligent and easy to train. These small creatures have great desire to please and they do enjoy the training. You should train them with consistenci and positive reinforcement – which means, you should prepare a lot of treats.

8) Coat

One of the best appearance features of Lowchen is definitely their coat. It is dense, fluffy, long and slightly wavy. Great thing about their coat is, that even though they do shed, it is nothing terrible. Lowchens can be found in many color varieties, including black, blue, cream, fawn, chocolate or gold sable.

9) Size

Lowchen is small dog with short head and wide muzzle. Their height should be between 11-14 inch which is 28-36 cm and they should weigh between 10-18 pounds, which is 4,5 – 8 kgs.

10) Health

The Lowchen is an exceptionally healthy breed of dog with amazing lifespan between 12-14 years. The only common health problems are cataracts, patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy. To keep them happy and healthy, you should exercise them daily and také them on at least one daily longer walk.
