Jonangi Dog Breed - TOP 10 Interesting Facts

1) Origin
This is an old breed which ancestry is unknown. It is believed, that they originated in Andra Pradesh region near the lakes. According to the locals, they were originally bred by duck herders. They would also protect the ducks from predators. They were also used to herd other animals and also as hunters.

2) Almost extinct
When the locals turn to more profitable aquaculture and stopped breeding ducks, the Jonangi lost their main purpose and most of them were left on their own. This is a hardy breed and they learned quickly how to survive and they evolved into very skilled fish hunters. The local farmers did not like that Jonangi were killing their fish so they went on killing these dogs to verge of extinction.

3) Rarity
Luckily, the breed is not extinct, but it is extremely rare. There are few enthusiastic breeders in India and thanks to them, this breed is still alive and their numbers are slowly raising. Today, you can find the Jonangi in indian regions of Andra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.

4) Digging
Jonangi loves to dig. And i am not talking about the typical digging, they love to dig really big holes and than sleep in them. It is probably giving them the feeling of safety, which is why very often they will prefer to sleep in a ditch, rather than a pet bed.

5) Protector
The Jonangi loves its family, but they are suspicious and alert when they see a stranger. Actually, this is quite protective breed. But do not worry, they should not be agressive without a reason.

6) Trainability
The Jonangi is highly and most importantly easily trainable breed. It is not because they would be extremely intelligent, but mostly because of they are totally devoted, easygoing and eager to please dogs. Thanks to those temperamental traits, it is easy to train them. Overall, the Jonangi makes great family companion, they create strong bond with its owner and family, they are affectionate, curious, cheerful and playful. They also like company of older kids and get along with other household pets, especially if they are raised with them.

7) Yodeling
One of the interesting facts about the Jonangi is, that they almost never bark, but they will yodel instead. It is very hard to describe the yodeling, so i if you would like to hear it on your own, i am giving you link to another video in description.

8) Appearance
One of the most distinctive features of the Jonangi is the wrinkled forehead. Due to a lot of interbreeding, you can find a lot of differences between various Jonangi dogs, but a typical jonangi has pricked ears, very short, but dense coat, short muzzle and squat face, and athletic body. You can find them in many different colors, the most common would probably be all white, all black, white with black spots, grey and brindle.

9) Exercise
The Jonangi is extremely agile and lively dog with high energy. They are capable of covering very large distances and they can easily move over difficult terrain. As you would probably expect, this dog needs a lot of exercise. They are more suited to life in the countryside than in the city and they will love to have access to a big, but fenced yard, where they can burn off their energy.

10) Size
The Jonangi is medium sized dog breed with average height between 46-56 cm which is 18-22 inches and weight is typically between 20-29 kg, which is 45-85 pounds. The females tend to be little bit smaller and lighter than males.
