These dogs are two of the biggest dogs in the world. But otherwise, they are very different. There is obvious difference in their appearance. Irish Wolfhounds have shaggy rough coat and bearded face and their ears are carried back. They can be in gray, white, brindle, black or red colour. On the other hand, Great Dane can also be blue, harlequin or mantle and their coat is very short. You will often time see Great Dane with cropped ears, but naturally they fold forward.

I was talking about their appearance, but i didnt mention their size. So, which one is actually bigger? It might look like easy question, but its not that easy to answer, because bigger can mean taller but also heavier. On average, Irish Wolfhound is little bit taller than Great Dane. Irish Wolfhound average height is 85 cm and Great Danes is 80 cms.

But the Guiness World Record belongs to Great Dane named Zeus, who was 111 cms tall! But Great Danes are heavier on average and its not a small difference. Healthy Great Dane outweighs his opponent by about 15 kilograms. So its hard to say, which breed is bigger, because Irsh wolfhound tend to be taller than Great Danes, who are on average heavier.
