Rottweilers are very popular nowadays. They are calm, courageous, confident dogs, that makes great guards and family companions. But they had more functions in their history, they were herders, they work for butchers and they were one of the earliest police dogs.

We dont have official records of Rottweiler ancestry anywhere. But it is believed, that Rottweilers are descendants of Roman cattle dogs. Those dogs had to be very strong and tireless, because Roman soldiers took them while they went to Switzerland and Germany. They used these dogs mostly as night guards of their camps.

When Germans repelled Romans in the 3rd century, they didnt have time to také the dogs with them, so they stayed here. And they started to bred with other local dogs. They probably interbred with Bernese Mountain dogs, Greater swiss mountain dog and Entlebucher. Not only, today Rottweiler share a lot of DNA with them, they also look pretty similar.
