1) Origin

There are three Schnauzer breeds – the miniature, standard and the giant Schnauzer. The standard schnauzer is the original breed and the giant schnauzer was developed by increasing its size. They were bred with the rough-haired sheepdogs and later the black Great Danes and maybe Bouvier des Flandres.

2) Purpose

The original purpose of Giant Schnauzer was to guard and protect the livestock. But this is pretty versatile breed, so its no wonder they were also used as a guard dog for butchers, stockyards and brewers. They are just amazing protectors.

3) Police and Military

In the 20th century in Germany, Giant Schnauzers were trained and used for police purposess. Guarding and police work have been the giant schnauzer's main occupations since that time. And during both World Wars they served for military as a guard, trench and messenger dog.

4) Intelligence

Just like all police dogs, even Giant Schnauzers are extremely intelligent. And not only they are very intelligent, they love to work. If you want to have a happy Giant Schnauzer in your home, you should give them some job or somethng to keep their mind busy.

5) Lot of energy

Giant Schnauzers are very active dogs and they requiere a lot of exercise. They definitely need daily longer walks and some vigorous exercise, especially when they are younger. They will love to go out jogging with you as well. If you are an active person, the Giant Schnauzer might be the best choice for you.

6) Strong Temperament

Giant Schnauzers were bred as working dogs, so they had to be kinda independent. And they still are. Because of that, they are not the easiest dog to train. Some Giant Schnauzer are very willfull and dominant. You must be absolutely consistent and very patient with dog like that.

7) Face

Giant Schnauzers are extremely easy to recognize thanks to their face. They have unique beard, mustache and whiskers and expressive eyebrows. They also have this mischevious look in their brown eyes.

8) Size

The Giant Schnauzer looks very powerful, sometimes maybe even intimidating. The height of the Giant Schnauzer should be bewteen 24-28 inches which is 60-70 cm and the weight should be between 65-90 pounds, which is 30-40 kg.

9) Grooming

Grooming is a bonding experience, and be prepared for a lot of bonding with Giant Schnauzers, they need to be groomed regularly. It is true, that Schnauzers are low shedding dogs, they need a lot of brushing. And It’s important to keep his head trimmed.

10) Messy dogs

Schnauzers can be little bit messy, especially because of their beard. You will have to clean it after meal and they will drip water from the beard after they drink.
