French Bulldog - TOP 10 Interesting Facts

1) Origin
In the beginning of the 19th century, the dog fighting, bull baiting and other dog blood sports were banned in England. That causes, that Bulldog owners could not use their dogs for this purpose anymore and they tried to change the breed from fighters to companions. That is why they reduced their size by crossbreeding with other dogs. In the same time, many Englishman leave England to find work in Normandy France. They took these small toy Bulldogs with them and they were kept on farms to chase away rats and as great companions. Their popularity skyrocketted even between French people and gradually these small Bulldogs became thought of as a breed – The French Bulldogs.

2) Companions
They were bred as companions and they are still one of the best companions in the dog world. They thrive for attention, they are very affectionate, playful and they love cuddling. French Bulldog will definitely makes you smile. But they are not total coach potatoes, they do want to go for regular walks and they do enjoy a good playtime.

3) No swimming
Of course, it is important to regularly exercise your Frenchie, if you want to keep them healthy and happy. But you should stay away from sea, lakes or rivers. The body structure of Frenchie is so heave towards their front, which is why most of them are not capable of swimming.

4) Coat
French Bulldogs have smooth, shiny and short coat on their loose and wrinkly skin. You can find them in many colors, most commonly in fawn, cream, white and varieties of brindle, but you can find them in almost any color.

5) Face
French Bulldogs are very easy to recognize, especially thanks to their cute large head. The most distinctive feature are the bat ears. They have adorable pretty big and dark round shaped eyes, The muzzle is broad and laid back with a black nose.

6) Talking
Frenchie are not the biggest barkers but they definitely love to talk and be vocal. They are known for many different sounds, including yips, snores, gargles or yawns. You will really feel, that they developed their own language and they are trying to say you something important.

7) Size
Frenc Bulldog is small but sturdy – they are built like a small tank. The average height should be between 11-13 inches, which is 28-33 cm. The weight is between 16-28 pounds which is 7-13 kg. The females are naturally little bit smaller than males.

8) Health
Sadly, the French Bulldog is suffering from a lot of health issues. Most commonly from ear infections, patellar luxation, back and spine problems, cherry eye, cataracts, skin fold dermatitis. They also have problem with overheating in summer, just like many other Brachycephalic breeds.

9) Birth and reproduction
Frenchies would have big troubles to reproduce without our help. Most of the French Bulldogs are incapable of natural breeding and they require artifical insemination. It is because of their slim hips, which is why they are unable to mount the female and reproduce naturally. Also, majority of French Bulldogs are not giving birth naturally, but they must undergo a C-section. Otherwise, the puppies might get stuck in the birth canal and their lives as well as their mom’s would be in danger.

10) Training
French Bulldogs are smart, but they can be little bit stubborn. They need a good motivation, but if you will provide it, than they are pretty easily trainable and they are definitely capable of learning a lot of tricks and commands. And what is the best motivation for most of dogs? Of course, a lot of treats and affection!
