1) Origin

Dogue de Bordeaux is a dog from France with long ancestry that dates back to the middle ages. We are not sure about their ancestors, but is believed that they are descendants of the Alans. Their original purpose was to guard a homestead and to be a great personal protector.

2) Dog sports

This is not very active breed, but they like to work and they are pretty eager to please. They are great dogs for sports like obedience and especially the cart pulling trials, they are great at it. And if you are lucky, you can even find Dogue de Bordeaux serving as a therapy dog.

3) Stubborness

Dogue de Bordeaux tends to be a lot stubborn and independent dog. They also have tendencies to be pretty dominant. That is why they need firm and consistent leader that will show them who is in charge.

4) Drooling

Dogue de Bordeaux are big droolers, just like other mastiffs, they have loose skin hanging from their lips which cause the drooling. You will probably find the strings of drool everywhere – on the floor, your furniture and even on the walls.

5) Versatile dog

Dogue de bordeaux served a lot of different purposes during their history. According to the FCI They were used for hunting large game such as boar, for fighting for the guarding of houses and cattle and in the service of butchers. There were three types of Dogue de Bordeaux – the The Toulouse type, the Paris type and the Bordeaux type, which is the origin of today’s Dogue.

6) Good with kids

Thanks to their calm, gentle and loving personality, Dogue de bordeaux is a good companion for children. His laid back nature means that he’s unlikely to send a toddler flying. But you should never leave any dog with a young child unsupervised.

7) Early Training

Because of their independent and stubborn nature, they are not pushovers to train. It is important to start very early with the training, because they will be very quickly stronger than you. It is very challanging task to train strong and stubborn dog. But with a lot of patience and leadership, they are capable of learning a lot of tricks.

8) Size

Dogue de Bordeaux is very muscular dog with solid built. They should be between 23-26 inches tall which is 57-67 cm and their weight should be between 120-140 lbs which is 54-65 kg.

9) Protector

This dog was used as a protector in the past and they still have the watchdog personality. They will probably bark when something suspicious is going on around your home and they tend to be pretty protective over their owners.

10) Health

As with most giant breeds, various health complaints are identified in the Dogue de Bordeaux. The most common problems are Cardiac disease, epilepsy, skin allergies and optical disorders. Sadly, this breed has one of the shortest lifespan of all, around 7 years.
