1) Uncertain history
Some people believe, that Chihuahua history dates back to the Toltec civilization and that they are descendants from the Techichi dog. This is the most common and accepted theory, but some other people say that their origin can be trace back to 1500s and dogs that were brought to the Mexico by Spaniards. What we know for sure is, that this breed is named after Mexican state of Chihuahua, where they were discovered in the middle of 19th century.
2) Different types
Chihuahua is one of the most diversified dog breed of all and we can say, that every Chihuahua is different. They are long coated and smooth coated Chihuahuas and we can also separate the apple head, pear head and deer head Chihuahuas. The most common type is the Apple head smooth coated Chihuahua, but even then, there is a lot of variety between them. That is because of the color - You can find all the Chihuahua types in all the different colors and they can also be bicolor, tricolor, spotted, merle or brindle. If you are interested in different types of Chihuahua i have another video just about this topic, you can find link in description.
3) Smallest dog
The Chihuahua is according to the official breed standards the smallest of all dog breeds. The average fully grown Chihuahua height is between 15-25 cm which is 6-10 inches and weight only between 1-3 kg, which is 2-6 pounds.
4) Fragile dogs
As you would probably expect, Chihuahuas are very fragile and it is important to keep that in mind. They can be injured easily, especially when they are younger. They are also born with an opening in their skull, commonly known as a molera or soft spot. Be extra aware of teacup puppies and i would not recommend you to buy them, because they are extra fragile and suffer from many health issues. Normal Chihuahuas are small enough, there is no need for teacup version of the smallest dog in the world.
5) Living with
Chihuahuas are amazing companion dogs, they are very loyal and love attention. They are not the typical lap dogs, because they are pretty active and they will definitely want to go for a walk every day. Be aware of their kinda dominant and temperamental nature, it is not uncommon for chihuahua to try dominate their owners. You should never forget that even though they are very small, they are still dogs and not babies and you should act towards them as dogs. They do need consistant and patient leader to become obedient companions.
Chihuahuas might be small, but they are not afraid of anything and they will stand up against much stronger animals, when they feel they are in danger. In 2007 a Chihuahua named Zoey protected its owners 1 years old grandson from a rattlesnake by jumping in front of the serpent. And i guess most of us sometimes saw a Chihuahua barking and trying to scare off much bigger dogs.
Because of their protective and mistrustful nature, which actually makes them good watchdogs, they need good socialization from the puppyhood. If you dont want your chihuahua to bark on other dogs or be alert towards other people when you are outside, you should socialize your Chihuahua to as many children, adults, and other animals when they are still young puppies. Dont be overprotective over them, let them explore the world.
The smooth coated Chihuahua is very easy to maintain, regular weekly brushing will do it. If you have long coated Chihuahua a soft bristle brush works best and should be used several times a week. Both varieties do shed, and believe it or not, the short haired type sheds much more. Other than that, you should regularly check the Chihuahuas ears, eyes and nails and clip them or clean them if needed.
9) Long lifespan
Amazing fact about the Chihuahua is their very long lifespan, which is between 13-20 years. Their lifespan is one of the longest of all breeds. But of course, just like all dogs, the still suffer from some health issues, most commonly from patellar luxation, heart murmur, pulmonic stenosis or Hydrocephalus.
Relative to their bodies, the Chihuahua has the biggest brain of all dog breeds. They are definitely very smart and easy to train. They are definitely capable of learning all the basic commands like stay, come or lie down. Chihuahua can also train a lot of tricks. You should train your chihuahua regularly, it is a great activity that will strengthen the bond between you.
