1) Origin

The Beauceron is mostly known as a French herding dog, but they were developed in the 1500s as wild boar hunters. After a while, they started serving as a livestock guardians and herders. Beauceron is one of the breeds, that were used in Doberman creation and you can definitely see some of the similarities.

2) Double Dewclaws

The Beauceron is one of the few dog breeds, that have double dewclaws in their breed standard. It is one of the most distinctive feature of the breed and if you want to attend showring with the Beauceron, the double dewclaws are a requiered.

3) Workers

The Beaucerons were not only used as herders, guards and hunters. The French Army used them as messenger dogs in both world wars and they were amazing at it. They are very smart, so they follow all the instruction, they were excellent at detecting mines and follow trails. And even today, Beaucerons are often used by police and military.

4) Environment

Beaucerons can definitely live in both – outdoors and indoors. But they will totally prefer the outdoor living. The best environment for them would be a farm or a home with large yard, where they can romp out their high energy.

5) Temperament

The Beauceron is best described as intelligent and courageous dog breed, who is extremely loyal to his family. They are very protective and make good guards. It is true, that they are affectionate towards their family, but they are not very trusting towards strangers.

6) Energy Level

Just like all the herding dogs, Beaucerons have tons of energy. You should stimulate their body on daily basis, but you should not forget about their mind as well. If you are not using the Beauceron as a working dog, you might try some dog sport with them, they excell at agility, flyball, herding events, but also in tracking and obedience trials.

7) Coat

The Beauceron coat is doublecoated dog with smooth outercoat and dense undercoat. The accepted colors are Black and Tan and Harlequin, which is blue-mottled with tan markings. Its important to say, that they do shed all year long and they shed a lot especially during the hot summers.

8) Size

The Beauceron is medium to large sized dog with a powerful and athletic appearance. Their average height is between 61-70 cms which is 24-28 inches and weight between 30-45 kgs, which is 66 to 100 pounds. The males are naturally larger than females.

9) Not for Novices

Beauceron is not the best breed choice for novice or even first time dog owners. It is mostly because their independent temperament, which can be hard to manage, if you have no experience with dogs. Also, they are relatively strong and powerful dogs and if you fail training and socialization with strong dog, you are in big trouble.

10) Health

Beauceron is a very healthy dog breed with average lifespan between 10-12 years. They have large and deep chest, and just like many other breeds with chest like that, they are prone to bloating. They also suffer from hip dysplasia and allergies.
