1) Origin

Beagles ancestors are pack hunting dogs from Great Britain and France. Most often, those hounds hunted rabbits, which was the original purpose of Beagle as well. Beagles were probably written about as early as the 1400s. Since than, a lot changed on Beagle, but they are still sometimes used for hunting.

2) Pocket Beagle

The first Beagles were only about eight inches tall and we call them the pocket beagles. They were often times carried by hunters in their coat pockets when the hunt started. This beagle version does not exist nowadays because they were developed into larger Beagle, we know today.

3) White Tail

You probably noticed, that beagles have white tail tip. And guess what, there is a reason for it! As hunting dogs, it was handy for the huntsman to be able to spot his dog in long grass. So the beagle was actually bred, to have white tail tip.

4) Loudmouth

Beagles are hunting dogs, and as many other hunting dogs, they are very vocal. They like to bark, bay, howl and even growl. And it is even believe, that the name Beagle comes the Middle French 'word that can be literally translated as 'wide throat, or loudmouth.

5) Royalty

Queen Elizabeth was a big dog lover and she owned many dog breeds. And one of these breeds was a pocket beagle. And this was not the only moment, when the beagles were in high society. President Lyndon Johnson had two Beagles, named Him and Her, in the white house during his presidency.

6) Nose with feet

Beagles are sometimes referred to as "a nose with feet" because their nose tends to lead the way to whatever is picked up. They have extraordinary sense of smell, which is widely used by hunters, but also by law enforcement to track drugs or explosives.

7) Snoopy

The most famous Beagle is probably from the cartoon Peanuts. His name is snoopy and it is one of the most famous cartoon dogs. The author of the Peanuts was inspired by his own real life beagle called Spike, when he was creating snoopy. Another famous beagles are odie from the Garfield and the dog from movie Shiloh.

8) Popularity

Beagles are loved all around the world and they are one of the most famous dog breeds worldwide. Actually in the USA, according to the AKC statistics, they were in the TOP 5 most registered breeds in the year 2016. And i believe, that their popularity is not going to decrease anytime soon.

9) Escape Artists

Beagles are good runners. Really really good runners. They can also problem solve to overcome hurdles that would otherwise prevent them following the scent. That is why it is recommended to keep Beagles on leash and to secure your property with high fence. Otherwise, your beagle might run away when they will feel something interesting.

10) Size

Beagles are not the largest dogs, but they are pretty muscular and solid breed. Their height should be between 13-16 inches which is 33-41 cm and their weight should be between 20-24 pounds which is 9-11 kgs. Females are naturally little bit smaller than males.
