Despite the small size of Dachshund, it is very courageous, alert, independent and brave hunter. They are small dogs with big dog temperament. But did you know, that there is not only one standard size of Dachshund? There are actually three size categories for this breed.
If we look into the official FCI breed standard, we can find that it categorizes Dachshund into three size classes, the standard Dachshund, which should be 35-47 cm tall, which is 13-19 inches. Than there is a smaller, Miniature Dachshund with height between 30-37 cm, which is 12-14 inch. And than there is the smallest Rabbit Dachshund with height only between 25-32 cm, which is 10-13 inch.
No matter what size the Dachshund is, its temperament should always be the same. These dogs were bred as independent and brave hunters of small game such as rabbits or badgers. They are used for this purpose even today, but they are also favourite playful, spunky, curious, friendly and lively companion dogs!
But lets go back to the types of Dachshunds, because the size is not the only way how we can divide these dogs into different types. It is because the Dachshund also comes, next to the three sizes, also in three coat types.
The most common coat is smooth. It is a glossy and shiny short and dense coat. Great fact about this kind of a coat is, that it is absolutely easy for maintenance, as it does not require almost any grooming at all.
The other coat types are long-haired Dachshunds and wire-haired Dachshunds. The long haired Dachshunds have, well, long fur, which is also silky and it can be either wavy or straight. This coat was developed to better protect the breed when they are on the hunt. The long hair is especially visible on the ears, tail, belly, neck and legs. The long haired Dachshunds requires regular brushing to keep the coat in good condition.
The last type is wire haired Dachshunds with medium long, wiry and coarse coat which gives them, lets say, rough and rustic appearance. These dogs are especially famous for their beard and eyebrows, which makes them very unique. This is the rarest of all three different coat types and they also need regular brushing to keep the coat in best possible condition.
The last way how to separate this breed into different types is based on its color and again, we can look into the official FCI breed standard to find proper answer about the official colors. The Dachshund can either be one coloured, two coloured, in dapple or merle colour pattern or in brindle colour pattern. The most common coat colors are definitely solid red, black and tan, red and tan and cream color.
There are also several popular Dachshund crossbreeds, which are quite trendy these days. Although they should not be classified as Dachshund types, as they are not pure bred Dachshund, i will at least mention some of them. One of the most popular is Doxiepoo and Chiweenie, which i both covered in separeted videos on this channel and if you would like to check the videos i am giving you link in description. Other crosses include Dorgi, Doxle or Dachshound.
So there you go, these are all different types of Dachshund breed. The dogs temperament should not vary based on its type, as all the dogs were bred for the same purpose which is hunting. So dont worry, no matter what Dachshund you have or you are going to buy or adopt, it should always have the same friendly and curious temperament.
