20) Chippiparai
The Chippiparai is a slender sighthound from Tamil Nadu with incredible hunting skills. It is a very fast and endurant hunter with elegant and well balanced body. It is a very smart, but also quite independent and confident dog breed that is loyal to its owner.
19) Haofa – Tangkhul Hui
This is a very rare breed from Manipur state, which is a good companion, alert watchdog and reliable hunter. The Haofa is quite intelligent and obedient dog, which is typically very faithful to its owner and family.
18) Jonangi
The Jonangi is extremely loyal dog known for its very short hair and for its love for digging very big holes and staying in them. It is also very good vermin and small game hunter, duck herder and watchdog. These dogs also has the ability to catch a fish in a lake, which requires incredible reflexes, speed and precision.
17) Pandikona
The Pandikona is an ancient and primitive dog breed with similar appearance as the African Basenji. It is quite independent breed capable of taking care of itself. These dogs just love to be free. The Kanni is a rare sighthound from Tamil Nadu state. It is a similar breed as Chippiparai and the main difference is the color, where the Kanni should in black and tan or sable color. The breed has interesting nickname, which is Maiden's Beastmaster, which is because they are often gifted to newlywed brides as their guardians.
14) Rajapalayam
The Rajapalayam is a versatile and multi purpose dog breed, very often times seen as a home protector. It is a very alert and watchful breed which makes them amazing for protection. Traditionally, back in the past, these dogs were also used for hunting and coursing and they were able to hunt even pretty strong animals such as wild boars. When the dog is not working, they also make faithful, gentle, patient and loving companion dog.
13) Indian Spitz
One of the most, if not the most popular Indian breed is the Indian Spitz. It is a typical affectionate companion dog developed from the German Spitz brought to India by Brits. To handle the heat of India easier, the German Spitz was crossbred with some local dogs, which is how the Indian Spitz was developed. It is a small, cute and predominantly white small dog with lively and playful character.
12) Bully Kutta
This is one of the strongest of Indian breeds, often times used for hunting, patroling and protection. The name Bully Kutta can be literally translated as heavily wrinkled dog. This is a smart, energetic, endurant, very protective, alert and loyal dog breed. It is not uncommon for these dogs to weigh 90 kg, which is 200 pounds, so as you can see, this truly is incredibly big and powerful dog.
11) Indian Pariah dog
Also known as the Desi dog, the Indian pariah is extremely old dog breed and it is believed that it is one of the oldest of all dogs in the world. This is a very versatile breed capable of hunting all kinds of game and also protecting the home and property. This is also a great companion dog, because it is a very affectionate, loyal and loving breed.
10) Bakharwal
The Bakharwal hails from the Indian Himalayan range where it is traditionally used for guarding the livestock. They are similar to Tibetan Mastiff, but slightly smaller. Many people believe, that they do share similar ancestry with the Tibetan Mastiff and that they are relatives. It is a courageous, alert and protective breed with independent mind.
9) Sinhala Hound
The Sinhala Hound is a dog from Sri Lanka, but since there is a close connection between India and Sri Lanka, these dogs were present in India for a long time. They are often times considered as street dogs, because they very often lives semi wild scavenging life without the owner.
8) Sarail Hound
Just like the Sinhala Hound, the Sarail Hound is not directly indian breed, because it is a legendary dog of Bangladesh, but their history is connected with some Indian states as well, such as Bengal. It is a great looking athletic dog with deep chest, long legs and beautifully colored coat.
7) Rampur Greyound
This is a medium to large sized sighthound from the Northern India from Uttar Pradesh state. It is believed that they are descendants of Afghan Hounds, with later addition of Greyhound which increased the dogs speed. It is a well balanced, fast and elegant sighthound.
6) Himalayan Sheepdog
The Himalayan Sheepdog, also known as Gaddi Kutta, Bhotia or Bangara is an independent and powerful livestock guardian. It is said, that the Himalayan Sheepdog is capable of protecting its flock even from snow leopard. This is one of the few Indian breeds with longer coat, which is because they are traditionally used in the cold regions of Himalayas.
5) Gull Dong
A result of crossing Pakistani Gull Terrier with Bully Kutta, the Gull Dong is extremely powerful and tenacious dog breed which makes it great protector.
4) Kombai
Many Indian dog breeds were developed in Tamil Nadu state and Kombai is another great example. The Kombai is very strong and muscular dog breed traditionally used for protection, but also capable of succesfully hunt all kinds of game. This is a very brave, courageous, territorial and protective dog breed.
3) Hameerpura Sikar Greyhound
Another fast sighthound of India. This one hails from the Sikar district of Rajasthan and it is a skilled hunter with slim, but pretty muscular body and high prey drive.
2) Vikhan Sheepdog
This is a skilled livestock guardian dog from the borders of India and Pakistan. It is a highly territorial, brave and strong dog who is capable of surviving the cold Himalayan weather without any problems.
1) Mudhol – Caravan - Pashmi
The Mudhol Hound is an amazing slender, but very strong and athletic sighthound from Karanataka and Maharashtra states. They are bred for speed, endurance and agility and indeed, this is extremely fast breed. These dogs are probably descendants of Middle Eastern sighthounds that got into India thousands years ago, so even this is a very old and ancient dog breed.
