17 Dog Breeds That Look Like Doberman

Dobermans are very unique dogs. They are not closely related to any other certain breeds and they were developed as a mixture of several pretty different breeds, such as Weimaraner, Rottweiler, Beauceron, German Pinscher or possibly even Greyhound and Manchester Terrier. They truly are very unique in their appearance and temperament and most Doberman owners could not imagine to own a different breed after they once lived with the Doberman.

But still, there are few dog breeds that looks a little bit like Dobermans and some poeple might even confuse them for Dobies. This video will only focus on the similarities in appearance. So it might be useful if you are looking for a dog of Dobermans appearance but with different temperament.

1) Beauceron
The Beauceron is one of the breeds used in the creation of the Doberman, so it is no wonder that they share some remarkable similarities with them. But the Beauceron is little bit smaller than the Doberman and they have thicker double coat, which gives them heavier appearance.

2) Brandlbracke
The Brandlbracke, also known as Austrian Black and Tan Hound is a very elegant breed with Doberman colors. They have excellent sense of smell, lovely voice and good natured personality.

3) German Pinscher
I would say that the German Pinscher is most likely the dog that is most similar to the Doberman. It is also one of its ancestors and they have similar color, body type and face type. The main difference is that they are smaller than the Dobie.

4) Chinese Red Dog
Pointed ears, strong and athletic body, beautiful short red or black and red coat, that is the Chinese Red Dog, also known as Laizhou Hong. There are definitely some similarities with the Doberman, not only in appearance but also in their alert and protective temperament.

5) Rottweiler
I am sure you expected Rottweiler in this video. I had to mention them even though i dont think they are that extremely similar, other than the coat color. The Doberman is much more athletic and elegant, while the Rottweiler is wider, heavier and more muscular.

6) Canis Panther
The Canis Panther is a mix of four great dog breeds. Most of the time, they look little bit similar to Dobermans, so its no wonder that one of those breeds really is the Doberman Pinscher. The other three are black Great Danes, black Labrador Retrievers and American Staffordshire Terriers.

7,8,9) Miniature Pinscher, Prague Ratter, English Toy Terrier
There are several tiny dogs that look like Doberman puppies. So if you like the appearance of Doberman, but you are looking for a very small dog, you can definitely check out these three similar breeds – the Miniature Pinscher, Prague Ratter and English Toy Terrier.

10) Polish Hunting Dog
The Polish Hunting Dog is usually black and tan athletic dog breed with amazing endurance, strong sense of smell and high prey drive. I could also mention another, similar Polish dog breed - the Polish Hound. Both breeds definitely share some similarities with the Dobie.

11) Australian Kelpie
Even though there is no relation between the Australian Kelpie and Doberman, i heard several times that people thought that the Australian Kelpie must be a Doberman cross. In reality, the Australian Kelpie is separate dog breed with its own history, utilization and very different temperament.

12) Transylvanian Hound
Next breed similar to the Doberman is relatively rare and unknown and it is a Transylvanian Hound. They are very similarly looking to a Doberman, with a barrel chest and long face, although they have floppy hound ears.

13) Manchester Terrier
It is believed that the Manchester Terrier also played a role in Dobermans development. And indeed, eventhough smaller than the Doberman, it has the sharp look similar to it. It is excellent hunting dog and sport dog with great intelligence and trainability.

14) Black and Tan Coonhound
The black and tan racoon hunter is another breed with slight similarities to Doberman, even though it is on the first sight clear that they are hounds rather than guardians, especially due to the very large floppy ears, that they inherited from the Bloodhound.

15) Pharaoh Hound
In this case it is not the color which creates the similarity between the Doberman and Pharaoh Hound but rather the sleek, athletic and elegant build. If you would put Doberman next to the Pharaoh Hound the physical similarities would be clear, even though the Pharaoh Hound is slightly smaller and lighter breed.

16) Serbian Hound
Many hounds share some appearance similarities with Doberman and the Serbian Hound is not an exception. Previously known as a Balkan Hound, this is well-disciplined, energetic, tenacious and lively dog breed.

17) Slovensky Kopov
And the last dog in this video is also one of the rarest of all dogs mentioned in this video and it is the Slovensky Kopov. In North America, it is known under the name Black Forest Hound, even though they have nothing to do with the German Black Forest.

So here you have it. 17 dog breeds that look like Dobermans, at least partially. I tried to mention some of the rarer breeds, because i am sure everyone can think of breeds like Rottweiler or German Pinscher.

Doberman truly is very unique breed and once you fall in love with this breed it is hard to find another dog similar to the Doberman. People who mistake other breeds with Dobermans most likely never owned a Dobie on their own.

And even almost all the dogs in this video that have similar looks to Doberman are not similar to them temperament wise. Most of the breeds in this video are hounds and hunters, while the Doberman typically do not have high prey drive and chasing instinct, as they were never bred for hunting purposes.

If i would have to choose dogs that has both – similar appearance and temperament to Doberman – than it would probably be the German Pinscher, possibly Rottweiler, Laizhou Hong, also known as Chinese Red Dog and the Canis Panther. But it is important to say, that the Canis Panther is not recognized as a purebred dog, but it is still viewed as a crossbreed, where the Doberman is one of its parent breeds.

Speaking of crossbreeds, i could mention bunch of other Dobie crosses, that obviously are similar to Doberman. The most popular would definitely be the Doberdane – a Doberman and Great Dane cross, Doberhound, a Dobie and Greyhound cross, Doberman Shepherd, a Doberman and German Shepherd cross or Rotterman, a Rottweiler and Doberman cross. But i did not mention those directly in the video as most of these crosses have unpredictable appearance and temperament.

It is also important to say that not all the Dobermans are the same. There are definitely differences between the original European Dobermans and the Dobermans bred in America. The European Dobermans tend to be stronger, bigger, more alert and protective and overall better workers, while the American Dobermans tend to be more gentle and softer and they are smaller and lighter.
