Have you ever had a problem to distinguish Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu? Well you are not alone. I had the same problem as well, so i decided, to find out what are the key differences between them. The reason why they look similar is, that Shih Tzu is direct descendant of Lhasa Apso.
Both breeds have long, beautifull and fluffy coat. And their coat is probably their biggest difference and the easiest way to tell the breeds apart. If you will see side parting of the coat and you the coat is straight with black tips on muzzle and ears you can be sure, that it is Lhasa Apso. Shih Tzu does not have the dividing line and their coat is much more wavier.
Both dogs can be characterized as affectionate, loving dogs with average intelligence. They does not require much exercise, since their energy level is low to medium. Both can be described as non shedding – sometimes they are good for people with allergies and neither of these dogs drool. They dont have herding, hunting or fighting instincts.
