1) History

Records indicate that this European breed of dog has been in existence since the middle of the 15th century. The Lowchen is one of the Bichon breed class. The nickname of "Little Lion Dog" might be tracked back to the breed specific clip which will result in a lion-like short coat over the hindquarters and rear limbs down to the tarsus and the thick natural mane hair which is left on. In the time period between the end of the Second World War and the 1960s, it was one of the rarest of breeds on the planet, although has recently resurged in popularity. The AKC accepted them to the nonsporting group in 1999.



2) Bravery Symbol

The Lowchen is a member of the Bichon group of dogs and has been the most loved and treasured of dogs for a few centuries now and specifically with the nobility. The Lowchen dog, famous for their lion-like haircut, was used in many paintings in the 1500s. If a knight survived the war and was not killed, he was put in paintings along with a Lowchen at his feet. This was a symbol of the bravery and courage of the knight and a way to honor his service.

It is believed that the strict and careful breeding program of the 1970s is the reason the breed is so healthy. Once the Lowchen increases in population and popularity, it is likely that more health issues will occur.

For a little dog, the Lowchen has amazing energy. Although not overwhelming, this breed does like to run and play outside. The Lowchen will also need a couple of brisk walks each day. Believe it or not; this little dog makes a really good jogging companion. His little legs can keep up with the best of them however; runners should consider adding weight training to the regimen and carry the dog on their outings.



8) Ladies Dog

The Lowchen used to be particularly popular, especially with the ladies who would use them like hot water bottles. The dog would crawl under the blankets, lying very still next to their owner. Their shaved skin on their little bodies warmed many cold hands or feet.

Lowchen puppies are a pleasure to be around. They are easily potty-trained and as a matter of fact, all training for this breed goes quite smoothly. Socialization is necessary; although, the Lowchen is a naturally friendly and social dog.
