These two breeds are kinda similar to each other, both are herders, both are amazingly smart and easily trainable and both are very popular. And there are much more similarities between them. So what are the differences between them?
Of course, the first difference is in their origin, because these two dogs have different ancestors. GSD is obviously German dog that was developed in 19th century, so its relatively new breed and GSD ancestors are all kind of Bavarian dogs. Border Collie does not have German heritage, because it is a dog from Great Britain. Border Collie ancestors are dogs, that Romans brought to England in first century before christ to herd their livestock.
Lets talk a little bit more about their intelligence. There is no dog psychologist or trainer, who would not put GSD and Border Collie among TOP 10 smartest dogs. Actually most of the time, they are both in TOP 3. Border Collie on the first place, German Shepherd is third and on second place is Poodle. However, the breed is only one of several factors. Breeding and genetics come into play. A poorly bred Border Collie is not going to be as smart as a well bred German Shepherd.
