TOP 8 Corgi Lookalikes: Corgi or Not?

Strong Lookalikes
Corgis are truly unique, and there aren’t many breeds that look exactly like them. But I believe there are two dogs that are strikingly similar—and you might have never even heard of them! They share the same elongated body, pricked ears, and fox-like face. And these similarities aren’t just a coincidence—it’s very likely that they’re all closely related!
The first strong lookalike of both Corgis—Pembroke and Cardigan—is the Swedish Vallhund. This breed is sometimes nicknamed the ‘Wolf-Corgi’ due to its wolf-like coat and Corgi-like features.
And as I mentioned earlier, these similarities aren’t just a coincidence. It’s believed that sometime during the 8th or 9th century, either the Swedish Vallhund was brought to Wales, or the Corgi was taken to Sweden—which would explain why these breeds look so much alike. But since both are ancient breeds with mysterious origins we will probably never know who is the ancestor and who is the descendant.
I am sure you will agree, that the Vallhund is extremely similar to Corgi, but if we examin them closely, we will find some key differences. The Vallhund is considered a „dwarf“ dog, just like Corgi, but they have slightly longer legs and they look more athletic. The ears are also slightly different as they are more pointier and they have completely different tail type.
The second strong lookalike is the Lancashire Heeler. And once again the similarities can be easily explaind by the origin of Lancashire Heeler, as it is generally accepted, that their main ancestors are Welsh Corgis and Manchester Terriers.
Just like the Corgi, the Lancashire Heeler has short legs, a long body, and similar facial features. However, there are some key differences. The Heeler is more athletic, while the Corgi has a heavier build. The Corgi also has rounder ears, a fluffier coat, and comes in more colors, whereas the Lancashire Heeler is typically only found in black and tan.
So yes, there are some differences between the Vallhund, Lancashire Heeler, and both Corgis, but let’s be honest—if you own a Heeler or a Vallhund, most people on the street will still think you have a Corgi!

Fox-Like Twins

In this second part of the video, the dogs won’t be complete strong Corgi lookalikes—but they’ll still share some striking similarities. Let’s call them ‘distinct lookalikes.’
Just like Corgis, these breeds are often described as fox-like, and that’s no surprise! They all have sharp muzzles, pointed ears, and bushy tails, making them resemble foxes just as much as Corgis do.
The first fox-like twin is the Icelandic Sheepdog. Just like the Corgi, this breed was developed as a hardworking herder, and it shares the compact build, pricked ears, and fluffy coat. However, it tends to have a curlier tail and a more expressive face, giving it a slightly wilder look.
Next we have the most famous fox-like breed – the Shiba Inu. I would say that the Shiba Inu looks a bit like a Corgi with long legs. But of course there are some other differences as well, such as the tail or smaller Shiba Inu ears.
Than there is the Finnish Spitz. It has a longer snout and a different tail than a Corgi, but both breeds share fluffy coats and erect ears, making them look pretty similar. Plus, the Finnish Spitz is known for its talkative personality, much like Corgis, who always have something to say!
And finally, we have the Basenji—probably the most unique of the group. It has a shorter coat and a sleeker build, but the large ears and fox like face make it fit right in with this list. Unlike Corgis, Basenjis are known as the ‘barkless dogs’—but don’t let that fool you, because they can be just as vocal in their own way!

Fluffy Miniatures

In this part of the video, we’ll take a look at some of the smallest, fluffiest breeds that share certain Corgi-like features. They may not be herding dogs, but with their compact bodies, big ears, and thick coats, they could easily be mistaken for a miniature Corgi relative.
First up, we have the Pomeranian. These little fluffballs might not have the elongated body of a Corgi, but their fluffy coat, pointed ears, and lively personality make them a Corgi lookalike in their own right.
And finally there is the Chihuahua. To be more specific – a Longhaired Chihuahua. Of course, they are so much smaller than the Corgi, but i believe they do share some similarities, such as the perky ears or fluffy coat and the Longhaired Chihuahua could be mistaken for a tiny Corgi puppy by some people.
